Philanthro sponsored TEDx Constitution Drive
Philanthro is proud to be sponsoring a TEDx event that will be held on May 4th!
In the coming days, Philanthro will enter into its second fiscal sponsorship agreement with TEDxConstitutionDrive, “x” meaning an independently organized TED event. A fiscal sponsorship is a type of formal agreement in which a 501(c)(3) organization (in this case, Philanthro), provides its tax-exempt status to an independently-run project. TEDxConstitutionDrive will join VivaLaArt! in Philanthro’s fiscal sponsorship program. We have come to learn about the tremendous growth and empowerment that these arrangements provide on a number of levels. For Philanthro, it allows us to expand our brand and learn from others who have incredible passions for the projects we have chosen for the program. For the projects, the arrangement provides all of the benefits of a 501(c)(3) without going through the grueling process of actually obtaining the exemption – these benefits include the ability to accept financial contributions as donations and provide tax-deductible receipts to donors (as appropriate). In many cases, the tax-exemption status creates more and better opportunities with vendors, who are much more willing to offer support to officially licensed charities, rather than just ‘projects’. It also provides a certain level of administrative and organizational support that wouldn’t be available without the relationship.
Philanthro is extremely selective in the projects that it agrees to fiscally sponsor because the project, for all practical purposes, becomes part of our organization. This means that it needs to be aligned with Philanthro’s mission, have a leadership team capable of adhering to our reporting and governing standards, and maybe most importantly, the project needs to add something to our ‘portfolio’ that currently does not exist. VivaLaArt! brought the specialty niche of the art community to Philanthro – something that we would never been able to develop internally. But, it also brought a very similar mindset of curating experiences that eliminated that trade-off between going out with friends and giving back to the community. Similarly, TEDxConstitutionDrive will further extend Philanthro’s reach and breadth of ‘awareness’ driven initiatives. TED’s mantra is “Ideas Worth Spreading” and engages its audience with incredible people who speak to a variety of different topics – all centered around ‘world-changing ideas’. This will be TEDxConstitutionDrive’s third event, and will be on Saturday, May 4th at Auto Vino in Menlo Park, CA. This year’s theme will be Time.

Philanthro’s ‘high order bit’ continues to be to grow and enhance our community through expansion to other cities and these types of fiscal sponsorship agreements. We are in the business of empowering young professionals to explore and extend their philanthropic interests by providing a platform of resources – financial support, manpower, etc. We are extremely excited to enter into this agreement and look forward to spreading the ideas that TEDxConstitutionDrive brings forth.
If you are interested in participating in Philanthro’s fiscal sponsorship program, feel free to reach out.
In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxConstitutionDrive, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxConstitutionDrive, live speakers and TEDtalk videos will combine to spark deep discussion and connection. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including TEDxConstitutionDrive, are self-organized.
